5 Simple Tips to Keep Your Floral Arrangements Fresh Longer
by Riverside Flower Studio
Fresh flowers have a magical way of brightening up any space, whether it’s your kitchen table, office desk, or bedside stand. But nothing’s more disappointing than seeing your beautiful blooms wilt just a day or two after bringing them home. With a little care and the right techniques, you can extend the life of your floral arrangements and keep them looking vibrant and fragrant for days to come. Here are five practical tips to help you do just that:
1. Trim the Stems Properly
Right after you receive or purchase your flowers, give the stems a fresh cut at an angle, about one to two inches from the bottom. This angled cut allows better water absorption by preventing the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase. Re-trim every few days to keep the flow of water going strong.
2. Change the Water Regularly
Bacteria is one of the biggest enemies of fresh flowers. To avoid bacterial buildup, change the vase water every two days. When you do, rinse the vase thoroughly and refill it with fresh, lukewarm water. Adding a small drop of bleach or a floral preservative can help slow bacterial growth even more.
3. Remove Lower Leaves
Any leaves submerged in water will start to rot and create a breeding ground for bacteria. Strip off any foliage below the waterline before placing your flowers in the vase. This simple step goes a long way in keeping the arrangement fresher, longer.
4. Keep Flowers Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight
Flowers last longer in cooler temperatures. Keep them away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and appliances that emit heat. A cool corner of a room, away from drafts, is ideal. Also avoid placing arrangements near ripening fruit—fruit emits ethylene gas, which speeds up flower aging.
5. Use Flower Food (or Make Your Own)
Those little packets of flower food that come with bouquets aren't just for show—they provide essential nutrients and help control bacteria. If you don’t have any on hand, you can make your own with a mix of sugar (for nourishment), lemon juice or vinegar (to balance pH), and a small drop of bleach (to kill bacteria).
Bonus Tip: If your flowers start to wilt, don’t give up on them just yet. Try re-trimming the stems and placing them in warm water for an hour to perk them back up.
With a little care and attention, you can enjoy your floral arrangements for a week or more. These tips don’t just preserve beauty—they make every bouquet a lasting moment of joy.
